I Still Have a Dream

I recently shared my deepest desire to become a recognized/renowned Jamaican author. I spoke of my passion for poetry and for the works of Shakespeare. One of the persons I was sharing my dream with, spoke of how I am wasting my time and that he can't spend years working on something that will have him waiting to make money. I got up from the gathering of three and excused myself. Let me say to anyone who needs to hear this- if you spend your time doing what makes you useful to others but in no way makes you grow, the same "others" will be quite fine with your station in life. However, if you dare to want something else and to dream of what feeds your soul, they may try to murder your dreams. I do agree that I may be wasting my time- after all, I have always been a dreamer. Growing up in an inner-city community and using a coal-iron to iron my light-blue Wolmer's tunic and white blouse was in itself a struggle. I had to ensure that none of the soot dirtied my uniform. For an inner-city girl who had been awarded a place at one of the top high schools in Jamaica, I knew that it was always my dreams that kept me going. My life is one where I am always fighting for my place and for my dreams. I suppose in this my 50th year, I am wasting time chasing my dream but it is my good creative wasted time- not anyone else's. Go where you are watered... I will keep dreaming. I dream that the time will come when poems from my anthology (Echoes From The Naked Soul) will be studied by CSEC English and Literature students and others across the globe. I thank God for my gift of writing. I have so many stories to pen that it scares me to think of the power I release when I pen my thoughts and ideas. Though I fear the potency of my own words, the day has come to let my voice be heard. #literaturelover #poetrylover #inspired #fighter #dreamer #Wolmariangirl
